Hayman Island is the most northerly of the Whitsunday Island group. A small, but relatively mountainous island, Hayman is predominantly covered in eucalypt forests. And if the magnificent surroundings of bushland, beaches and the Great Barrier Reef weren't enough for you, the lavish 13 hectare Hayman Island Resort, on the southern side of the island, will afford you every conceivable luxury, as well as extensive sports and leisure facilities. Set around a tropical lagoon, on two gorgeous white beaches, you'll think you're dreaming. Pinch yourself. It's real!
Although quite small - you could walk around the island in a few hours - Hayman's highest peak, Mount Carousel, rises 250 metres above sea level, and affords breathtaking views of the Whitsundays. Unless you include the walking tracks, Hayman Island Resort is the only sign of development on the island, and was built in a 'low rise' fashion, in order to blend in with the environment. In four wings - the Pool, Palm, Lagoon and Beach Wings - there are 212 beautifully appointed rooms, suites, penthouses and a villa, all featuring private terraces or balconies.
Hayman is a premier island resort, offering unrivalled luxury. Upon arrival, you will soon see where the $300 million was spent, and it hasn't been in vain. Hayman Island has received numerous international awards and recognitions. 'Conde Nast Traveler' has named Hayman Island as one of the 'Top 3 Hotels and Resorts Worldwide', and Forbes Magazine went one step further, declaring it 'The World's Best Beach Resort'. Hayman Island is the only Australian island to be accepted as a member of the prestigious organisation 'The Leading Hotels of the World'.
Passing tours and cruises may stop off for a spot of snorkelling or diving at Blue Pearl Bay, on the island's west coast, but day trippers are not accepted within the vicinity of the $300 million resort unless on an authorized tour. for more details.
In this idyllic setting, you may feel like just stretching out on the soft sand or by one of the numerous interconnected resort pools and doing nothing at all, and that's fine. But should you feel so inclined, opportunities are available for just about every activity under the sun. You will find tennis courts, squash, and a nine hole putting green.
Popular watersports include waterskiing, sailing, windsurfing, and of course snorkelling and scuba diving. There's even a five star PADI accredited diving facility onsite, which provides tuition as well as equipment. Hayman Island Resort's own cruiser, the 'Reef Goddess', has facilities for 40 passengers, and takes diving trips to nearby islands and to the reef, naturally in the level of luxury you would expect from anything at Hayman.
Hayman Island Resort's game fishing boat, 'Sun Aura', is available for cruises or for charter, along with a skipper and a host. Remember this is the 'Marlin Coast' and game fishermen flock to Hayman in the months of September, October and November in search of Black Marlin. For a chance to view the grandeur of the Great Barrier Reef from above, scenic flights can be arranged, either by helicopter or seaplane. For something a bit simpler, you can always hire a dinghy or a paddle ski and do some exploring of your own; the islands close to Hayman are all National Parks and provide excellent opportunities for exploring.
