ATHERTON TABLELANDS

A scenic one hour drive into the Highlands west of Cairns are the Atherton Tablelands, Tropical North Queensland's own mountain getaway. Situated between the Bellenden Ker Range and the Great Dividing Range, this is an area rich in history, indigenous culture and old mining settlements from the early pioneering days.

The Cairns Highlands, as they are also known, are a fertile land with diverse terrain, rainforests, waterfalls and volcanic lakes, abundant in wildlife, and dotted with charming little country towns..one of the region's best kept secrets! With altitude ranging from 600 metres to 1,100 metres above sea level, the air feels cool and fresh, a different world from the humidity and hustle and bustle of Cairns, but only an hour or two away. Lush and fertile, the Atherton Tablelands are home to World Heritage listed rainforests, national parks, mountains, rivers, lakes and waterfalls. Visitors will find an area varied with rich agricultural lands and charming little townships, classic old country pubs, cosy motels, pleasant guest houses, fun backpackers hostels, farm stays, boutique style cottages and caravan and camping parks which will provide the ideal base for exploring. The Atherton Tablelands are Australian countryside at its best.

For visitors, the Tablelands present opportunities for many different and varied activities. Loads of great bushwalking; and birdwatchers will find a paradise in the Tablelands, with more that 300 bird species. Other activities include wildlife cruises, marsupial spotting, hot air ballooning and a range of water sports. Australia's widest waterfall, Millstream Falls, flows all year round. Wildlife is abundant on the Tablelands, as a night time spotlighting tour will show. You may even have the rare opportunity to see a shy tree kangaroo or a platypus in the wild.

Visitors can tour the 'waterfall circuit' around Millaa Millaa, pick up some unique arts and crafts at the huge monthly Yungaburra markets, explore the crystal caves and volcanic mountains of Atherton or the limestone caves of Chillagoe, marvel at the huge wind generators in Ravenshoe, check out the unique woodcraft at Tolga gallery, and take a step back in time in the historic villages of Herberton and Malanda, and rub shoulders with the cattlemen at Mareeba's big weekly cattle auction. The list of events that take place in the Tablelands is massive, with events ranging from authentic Aussie rodeos to popular fishing competitions, agricultural shows, music festivals, races for all ages and fitness and much more. You won't have time to fit it all in your holidays.

JULATTEN TO MOUNT MOLLOY
The area sround the small country villages of Mount Molloy and Julatten is not only steeped in history, but makes up one of the top birdwatching locations in the country...

But one of our favourite reasons to visit? The iconic Mount Molloy pub!
MAREEBA TO CHILLAGOE
Boasting 300 days of sunshine per year, Mareeba is considered Australia's hot air ballooning capital. Just a short drive west though, and you're in the outback town of Chillagoe, where a massive cave network is all that remains of coral that lived in the inland sea covering this area about 450 million years ago.
ATHERTON AND LAKE TINAROO
Atherton is a prosperous and bustling country town, built on the side of an extinct volcano called Halloran's Hill. It is surrounded by several small hills known as the Seven Sisters, also cinder cones from ancient volcanoes. Atherton was home to a thriving Chinese community from the 1880's into the early 1900's.
YUNGABURRA & CRATER LAKES
Yungaburra has a thriving local art and music scene, and its central location between Lake Tinaroo and the Crater Lakes of Barrine and Eacham makes this an ideal base for any visitor interested in boating, kayaking, bushwalking, water-skiing or just going for a swim.
MALANDA TO MILLAA MILLAA
This is dairy country, with lush green rolling hills interspersed with pockets of rainforest. The area around Malanda and Millaa Millaa is one of the wettest parts of the Atherton Tablelands, and is renowned for its so-called 'Waterfall Circuit', consisting of four stunning waterfalls all within a short scenic drive.
RAVENSHOE TO MT. GARNET
Ravenshoe, Queensland's highest town at At 930 metres above sea level, is at the crossroads of the Atherton Tablelands and the Savannah lands of the Northern Outback. The road from Ravenshoe to the old mining town of Mount Garnet is dotted with tiny settlements, and keep an eye out for Innot Hot Springs... be careful, the water's hot!
HERBERTON TO IRVINEBANK
Herberton is the oldest town on the Tablelands, once the richest tin mining field in Australia with up to twenty pubs, now - intriguingly - home to Queensland's only tropical vineyard. Nearby Irvinebank, another old mining town, is often referred to as has been described as a 'living museum' as a number of its historic buildings are open to the public.
TABLELANDS FOOD TRAIL
This rich agricultural land is covered by orchards, cattle farms, dairies and wineries... The area is now responsible for 90% of Australia's coffee production, and visitors can sample some of the local brews, as well as ice creams and wines and liqueurs made from tropical fruits.
