Virgin Blue and Qantas (as well as Qantas' discount subsidiary Jetstar) operate frequent flights from Brisbane to Cairns, and also to Townsville, and Proserpine and Hamilton Island in the Whitsundays.
Flights start at around $129 one way Brisbane to Cairns (although there are regular promotions and online specials) and flying time is less than two and a half hours. Qantas also runs an extensive network of routes from smaller airports around the state.

Greyhound coaches depart Brisbane five times a day for Cairns, stopping along the way you can make a real adventure of your journey. Hop on and off as much as you like between Brisbane and Cairns with the most popular Mini Travellers Pass, fares start from $258.

Oz Experience runs a fleet of 24 seat minibuses, and offers a jump-on, jump-off service, primarily aimed at adventurous backpackers. Oz Experience cover a number of different routes, and have various passes.


BY RAIL

The innovative and comfortable 'Tilt Train' sweeps up the east coast from Brisbane twice a week, and costs around $200 one way to Cairns. The classic 'Sunlander' plies the route four times a week, and fares range from around $200 for an economy class seat, to $400 for a first class berth, to over $700 for an exclusive luxury experience in 'Queenslander Class'. Note: Queenslander Class is only available on Sundays and Thursdays northbound, and Tuesdays and Saturdays southbound.

From points west- Toowoomba, Charleville, Emerald, Longreach, Mount Isa- you would first have to catch the train to one of the main coastal transport hubs, such as Brisbane, Rockhampton, or Townsville, before joining the Brisbane-Cairns route.
