BEDARRA ISLAND RESORT IS CLOSED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE DUE TO DAMAGE FROM CYCLOINE YASI, EARLY 2011
Beautiful view of one of Bedarra Island beaches, in Tropical North Queensland.Captain James Cook was the first European to sail these waters. On June 1770, he sailed into a group of islands which he named the Family Group. Bedarra Island was one of them and, at the time, it was considered 'The Mother'. The island was inhabited by Aborigines who called it 'Biagurra'. Later on, Biagurra was changed to Allason Island and, rumour has it that the island got its present day when E.J. Banfield did not hear the name correctly.

Europeans first settled in the island when Captain Henry Allason purchased it from the Queensland Lands Department in 1913. He only paid 20. Since then, Bedarra Island has changed ownership several times until Ken and Cynthia Druitt bought the island in 1957 and opened a small resort.

Bedarra Island is located five kilometres off the coast, just south of Mission Beach. It is considered Australia's most exclusive island, a place where time is measured only by the passage of the sun, a place where only the fortunate few can savour the finer things that life has to offer.
