The area of Queensland which is currently under floodwaters is bigger than the countries of France and Germany combined.
BUT this disaster area is 1,000 kilometres south of Cairns. Here in Tropical North Queensland it is business as usual. I mowed the lawn yesterday. I cooled off with a dip in the pool. Many of the Port Douglas and Cairns reef trips were fully booked today. Most of our digital underwater cameras were rented.
It’s a shame that the media tends to ‘tar us all with the same brush’ and as has happened previously, we will probably see a sharp downturn in tourism due to people’s perception that we are all rowing around the streets in rowboats
